From the recording There Goes Rhymin' Pie Man
I have had the experience along the songwriting path, where I will listen to a song I've written years earlier, and discover that, in a way the lyrics of the song story depict a future that actually happens. Kind of like divining my future. That's how I feel about "I Love You Still". I mean, what I was doing when I wrote this story was imagining a couple of advanced years, where the singer expresses love and tenderness to his pluperfect spousal unit, reassures her of his love and care for her. Turns out, the singer is me, and the partner he is singing to is Marie. But on the day I wrote this song, I would not meet Marie for another 4 or 5 years. Coincidence? I don't think so. Feels real to me.
Lyrics
If you wake up tomorrow, feelin’ tired and older,
Shufflin’ downstairs for a drink
And if you laugh in the mirror at the morning DJ
But you’d rather look down at the sink
Then just call my name and I’ll roll over
Stack up some cakes on the old cook stove’n
Bring you an extra large cup-o-Joe yes I will
‘Cause I love you still
You don’t look like a kid cause you’re not sixteen‘n
That’s just fine you know
We got kids much older than that
And they’re already on their own
You don’t to worry my sexy treasure
You look so good going through that dresser
So come over here and give me some pleasure if you will,
‘Cause I love you still
I will rub your tired shoulders all night long
I love to touch your satin body till the dawn
You got twenty five reasons
You’re breakin’ down’n
One for every day of the week
And anyway you’re too sensitive
‘Cause you know I love antiques
So jus’ call my name and I’ll come runnin’
To pack up your troubles and
Let the sun in
I would never consider you over the hill
AndI love you still
I love you still
I love you still
Fade
