From the recording The Cutting Room Floor
I did much of my recording during the "Pie Man" years all by my lonesome, and the song here, "Stay on the Path" is one I holed up in my basement to do one rainy Portland Sunday, (maybe, good bet though). I have put the songs here pretty much in order along the lines of how I was feeling and thinking then. Some of them are poppy fluff, you know, you just get a melody and a little lyric and off you go. But sometimes there is more of your heart in a song, and this is one of them.
Lyrics
I have spent a lifetime controlling my heart
By planning every move I make
Before I start
Success has been my only goal
My dream and my creed
But a little voice was deep inside
Whispering to me,
Stay on the path, that’s how you do your part
It isn’t always easy, to listen to your heart
Oh stay on the path, stay on the path
Oooooh, stay on the path
Now I’ve discovered romance does not mean love
And I have learned that getting by is good enough
There are some of my beliefs to keep
And some to release
So I’m paying strict attention to the voice inside of me saying
Stay on the path, that’s how you do your part
It isn’t always easy, to listen to your heart
Oh stay on the path, stay on the path
Oooooh, stay on the path
Now I do not feel resentful
For mistakes I have made
And I will not quit this journey
And I will not be afraid to
Stay on the path, that’s how I do my part
It isn’t always easy, to listen to my heart
Oh stay on the path, stay on the path
Oooooh, stay on the path
Stay on the path, that’s how I do my part
It isn’t always easy, to listen to my heart
Oh stay on the path brother, stay on the path sister
Oooooh, stay on the path
I’m gonna live in the truth
I’m gonna be more real
I’m gonna savor every moment
And say how I feel
